About Music Social Scene

Music Social Scene is excited to now be taking payment through the Indiana Medicaid Waiver!

Please email Otis Cantrell, MT-BC at info@musicsocialscene.com to connect to services through the Medicaid Waiver or private pay.

:From Otis Cantrell, MT-BC, steward of community music at Music Social Scene in Bloomington, IN:

The focus at Music Social Scene is on facilitating big and small experiences between people through lessons, music therapy and events like all ages open mics and shows which enhance the efficacy of 1 on 1 instruction and therapy. The primary modality through which Music Social Scene operates is that of community music therapy.

It is currently not affordable for most people to pay out of pocket for music therapy or lessons, especially from lower income households or those with lots of debt (arguably some of the most in-need of music therapy). Additionally, the state of folks' insurance and coverage in the US is in constant flux.

For this reason, there are different payment options through private pay and the Indiana Medicaid Waiver. The aim is to have a model which can be adaptive, consistent and timeless in contrast to people's uncertain insurances or incomes in the United States.

Music lessons and therapy should be accessible to all people no matter their circumstances and shouldn't be blocked from folks based on their lack of income, disability status, or lack of insurance coverage. Unfortunately, even if I believe all of these services should exist for free for all people, it is a reality for now in much of the US that lessons and music therapy are underfunded.

To offset this and provide extra opportunities for musical and social engagement, there are events for people of all ages at Music Social Scene labeled with ‘$10 suggested cover, pay what you can, no one turned away’ keeping it free for those who need it. Performers are always paid no matter how many people pay cover. To see an example of a performance, you’re invited to check out the Music Social Scene YouTube Channel here:

Through group lessons and music therapy people can have services for as little as $10 a week for an hour of group lessons and music therapy (or $10 a month if that’s all a person can attend). The Medicaid Waiver also covers up to 4 people in groups at the same time who are covered under the Waiver making group and individual sessions free for clients using the Indiana Medicaid Waiver.

Sign up with a sibling, a parent, a friend, a grandparent, a child; it’ll be more cost-effective for everyone while increasing the likelihood of utilizing concepts from sessions outside of the space and in the real world. Groups from 3-10 people are available for those interested.

Music is for everyone, and quality healthcare and access to music lessons should be for everyone too without causing folks to go into burdensome debt. It is my hope through power in numbers that various services can be offered to folks who otherwise may be waitlisted for services.

Through offering a wide variety of price options for different socioeconomic backgrounds, Music Social Scene fosters community while keeping services affordable and accessible to all ages.

Thank you to all the people who have been apart of creating community at Music Social Scene through your presence at events, in lessons, and music therapy sessions. All are welcome.
